Understanding Pelvic Organ Prolapse

A variety of pelvic health conditions exist, but most women suffer from POP, a sagging of the uterus and cervix caused by weakened muscles and ligaments. The pelvic organs, which include the uterus, bladder and rectum, are held in place by a web of muscles and connective tissues. When these muscles are damaged or weakened, the pelvic organs they support shift position and either fall into the vagina or press against the vaginal wall, causing discomfort and affecting sexual and physical activity. It is not usually painful, but because the symptoms can be embarrassing many women suffer in silence. The Risks: POP affects millions of women. Risk factors include pregnancy, obesity, hysterectomy, genetics and aging. Risks increase post-menopause, but the condition is common in women of all ages, who have or have not given birth. “As estrogen levels diminish, and the tissues that support the pelvic organs are weakened, the risks increase,” says Dr. Francie Bernier, PhD, RNC, Shenandoah University, Division of Nursing.
